FALLEN ANGELS

// How to Biblically Discern Who You Are Talking To //

No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14

I would never want to create expectation for you to run across Satan or one of his minions of hell, because I don’t want you to attach faith to that belief, but, I do want you to be aware of it’s possibility. And as the Scripture above illustrates it is not always in a way we would expect—Jesus calls him the “father of lies” for good reason. We discussed this a bit before in Revive The Night but it’s worth going over again.

The sad truth is that, I can guarantee, that everyone on the planet has had some measure of interaction with our enemy, but, just as confidently, I’d say few realize it. Many times we are looking for Satan and his angels to appear to us in some in-your-face epic end-times battle sort of way, but Satan seldom will. Rather he comes in the form of a thought, lie, or guise of a friend. If Satan had any other type of authority he would have used it in garden but as the narrative reveals, he had to use deception. He wasn’t able to physically take dominion so he had reduce his tactics to tricking Adam and Eve out of their’s. God gave man dominion over the earth, not Satan.

So He (Jesus) said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. See, I have given you
authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.

Luke 10:18-19

As believers in Christ we have authority over the enemy. Satan knows this promise, so he rarely attacks us in full form. Instead, he does and says anything possible to get us to believe his words over God’s. “Did God really say,” has been Satan’s trick from the beginning. He gets you to question God by questioning His Word, and by getting our eyes off of Jesus. He says, “look at your circumstances, look at your mistakes, look at what that pastor did. If you really had authority and if God really said, would those things have happened to you?” I know the sting of these lies all to well. And I know how the weight of past failures and disappointments makes this apple look all the more tempting—but don’t bite.

Unfortunately, these are just some of the lies Satan and his fallen angels try to implant, the actual list is much larger. As with any good inception, the only way he gains authority is if he can get you to believe the thought and lie is your own, or that it is from God. As in the garden, Satan will use any mask or form, smoke-and-mirror-show to get you to believe his reality over God’s.

I’ve actually had this happen in many different forms in my dream life. Sometimes his lies are subtle, like getting me to attach worry to a particular fact in my life. Other times it goes to the extreme, where Satan actually appears to me in a dream to tell me something. No matter which way he appears it doesn’t matter, because if he speaks to you, it is guaranteed to be a lie. He is not capable of anything else, the truth is not in him and deception is written into his vary name and nature. Maybe he will tell you a true fact about your life, but I guarantee it will never be the Truth. Satan might even give you insight into his plans for destruction of a city or people, but you don’t ever need to know the plans of the enemy. Remember, his plans led to his defeat, so what victory could it possibly bring you or your city? Plus, his plans are always the same and a bit redundant; kill, steal, and destroy

Whether he appears to you outright or in a subtle way, I would say both can be just as destructive. The small lies and tricks are sometimes even more so, because they are harder to expose. This is why I began the book, Revive The Night, with multiple chapters on getting to know God, because once you get to the know real deal, the counterfeit stands out all the more. Get to know His Word, His character, and His Spirit, and test every thought and dream that comes your way. As I previously explained, the perfect recipe for knowing truth and exposing our hidden enemy comes from the combination of two things: Having the right facts and discerning the right spirit.

Happy “snake treading!”

Questions

1. Have you ever had dreams in which Satan or a fallen angel has tried to deceive or misguide you with a subtle lie or distraction?

2. Have you had dreams in which you originally thought were from God but are now questioning their source? Take some time to figure out where the deception came in: Did you originally think the dream or message was from God because your view of Him was skewed or misaligned? Or is there some past circumstance, pain, or broken relationship that allowed the deception in?
