Asking the Right Questions // Dream Interpretation

Background

When I first started having God dreams it was actually quiet nerve racking. I believed that God didn’t love me, so when I had dreams from Him I thought to myself, “this must be some deceptive, New Age, spirit trying to talk to me.” In context, you have to remember that I had a twenty plus year history of having demonic dreams, which drastically shaped the way I thought of myself and God. It really drove two lies deep into my soul.

The first lie was, If God can speak to us through dreams, I must of done too much wrong or I must not be a child of God because of all the demonic dreams I was having. The second lie it drove deep within me was; Satan is in control while we are on earth so can I even have God dreams? The reason why this lie was so tantalizing is because it removed some of the condemnation I was feeling. To believe it must be really hard for God to speak to us since Satan has dominion on earth felt good. It definitely felt much better than believing God was completely done with me. The truth is that I actually struggled with both of these lies, even though they contradicted each other. Sometimes I would believe God didn’t love me and other times I would just believe that He doesn’t speak to us now because Satan has too much authority.

Now, take these belief systems into one of the first times I hear God audibly. I woke up in the middle of the night hearing, “In whose seed I remain, is in whose seed you become.” Immediately I fell back asleep and have a dream where those words were creating a world. Then slowly we started zooming in on this world, which I knew represented me. When we got close I saw the people and their technology was primitive and behind the times. When I awoke, I actually shelved the dream for the next six months because it was too scary to think about it. I was so scared that I was hearing from some demon and not God. If I only knew then what I know now, about God’s nature and about the simple ways to dissect dreams, as I’ll share with you in this section, I wouldn’t of wasted a second.

When I was finally ready to start looking at the encounter and dream, I asked myself; Does this sound like God? And, "can I find the phrase He told me in Scripture?" When I looked up the phrase from my dream it led me on a rabbit trail through Scripture which unearthed a theme of God’s righteousness and inheritance that was first mentioned in Genesis and lastly discussed in Revelations. Finding my encounter in Scripture helped me quickly come to my senses, helping me believe my dream was from God, then making it one of the most impacting dreams I’ve ever had.

In my Revive the Night, book and dream journal, I give ten questions to ask yourself that help break down and interpret your dreams and encounters. The purpose of each question is to help you dissect your dreams into smaller bite-size pieces to process and analyze.

When staring at a large map it is easy to get lost but when you have a map key and a section of the map broken down for you, it becomes easier to find your way. That is the purpose of asking questions. They don’t have to be complicated questions either. When you see the list I give you, you will probably just think it is common sense and simple. But sometimes we think the more complicated the problem, the more complicated the solution has to be, but that’s rarely the case. The questions I ask are simple and direct.

Also, do not ask yourself these questions in the middle of the night. I usually will just bullet-point my dream with enough facts that will jog my memory when I come back in the morning. Then I fill in the details and ask some questions. Furthermore, one fun experiment to do every night is to ask Holy Spirit a question before you go to bed to see if He will answer it in a dream. Try it. Sometimes you’ll find it’s that simple to hear His voice.
